1.   Family business

Among the 8,438 households in the sample, 8,346 reported whether or not their family engaged in any agriculture-related or business projects (including industrial or commercial activities) in the year of 2010. In total, there are 2,775 households that carried out agriculture-related activities in the year of 2010, accounting for 61.99% of all rural households in the sample. In other words, 38.01% of the rural households are not engaging in any agriculture-related activities. This data implies that much agriculturally suitable land is sitting idly in rural China.
